One of the things we enjoy most in our clinic is educating patients about acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine. Whether someone is new to acupuncture or has been receiving treatment for years, many of the same questions come up during visits.
With that in mind, I thought it would be helpful to answer some of the questions we are most frequently asked. My hope is that these answers will provide a better understanding of how acupuncture works, what you can expect during treatment, and how Traditional Chinese Medicine supports your overall health and well-being.
What is acupuncture??
Acupuncture is a safe, natural, and time-tested system of medicine that supports the body’s innate healing response. It involves the gentle insertion of very thin, sterile needles into specific points on the body to stimulate the body’s natural healing response.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, this healing occurs by restoring the balanced flow of Qi (pronounced “chee”), the body’s vital energy. Modern research suggests that acupuncture also influences the nervous system, improves circulation, reduces inflammation, and stimulates the release of the body’s own pain-relieving and healing substances.
What is Qi?
Qi is often described as the body’s vital energy or life force. Although Qi cannot be seen, its effects are reflected in every aspect of health, including movement, circulation, digestion, immunity, and emotional well-being.
According to TCM, Qi flows throughout the body along pathways called meridians. When Qi flows smoothly, the body functions optimally. When it becomes blocked or deficient, symptoms and illness may occur.
What are meridians?
Meridians are pathways through which Qi, Blood, and body fluids circulate. These interconnected channels help nourish tissues and support communication between different parts of the body.
The goal of acupuncture is to restore the smooth flow of Qi throughout these pathways, helping the body return to balance.
What does acupuncture do?
From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, acupuncture helps regulate the flow of Qi, Blood, and body fluids to promote balance and support the body’s natural healing abilities.
Modern research also suggests that acupuncture may:
- Stimulate the nervous system
- Encourage the release of the body’s natural pain-relieving chemicals
- Improve circulation
- Reduce inflammation
- Promote relaxation
- Support healthy nervous system function
What is the goal of acupuncture treatment?
The goal of acupuncture is to restore balance within the body, allowing it to function more efficiently. As balance improves, many patients experience reductions in pain, improved sleep, better digestion, increased energy, reduced stress, and an overall greater sense of well-being.
Are the needles sterile?
Yes. Every needle used in our office is:
- Sterile
- Individually packaged
- Single use only
- Safely disposed of in medical biohazard containers after treatment
Does acupuncture hurt?
Most patients are pleasantly surprised by how comfortable acupuncture is.
You may briefly feel a mild sensation as a needle is inserted, such as a small pinch, heaviness, warmth, tingling, or a dull ache. These sensations are generally temporary and often indicate that the acupuncture point has been activated.
Once the needles are in place, many patients become deeply relaxed and some even fall asleep during treatment.
How many treatments will I need?
Treatment recommendations vary depending on your health concerns, how long symptoms have been present, and your overall health.
Acute conditions often improve more quickly than chronic conditions. Your licensed acupuncturist will discuss a treatment plan tailored to your individual needs and monitor your progress along the way.
Are there any side effects?
Acupuncture is generally very safe when performed by a licensed acupuncturist using sterile, single-use needles.
Most patients feel relaxed after treatment. Occasionally, mild soreness, temporary fatigue, or slight bruising at a needle site may occur but usually resolves quickly.
We recommend drinking plenty of water after your treatment and allowing yourself time to rest if needed.
Why does my acupuncturist examine my tongue and check my pulse?
Tongue and pulse assessment are important diagnostic tools in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
The appearance of your tongue and the quality of your pulse provide valuable information about the balance of Qi, Blood, body fluids, and organ function.
Combined with your health history and symptoms, these findings help your acupuncturist develop a personalized treatment plan.
