In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Blood has a much broader meaning than it does in Western medicine. One of its primary functions is to nourish the body by continually circulating through the tissues and providing essential nutrients to the muscles, tendons, skin, hair, eyes, and internal organs.
According to TCM, Blood is produced from the nutrients we obtain from food and the body’s ability to properly digest and transform those nutrients. Blood Deficiency may develop when the diet lacks adequate nourishment, when the Spleen Qi is not functioning optimally to absorb and transform nutrients, or through significant blood loss, such as prolonged or heavy menstrual bleeding.
One of the most effective ways to nourish and build Blood is through a nutrient-rich diet. Supporting healthy digestion by strengthening Spleen Qi and reducing Dampness can also improve the body’s ability to absorb and utilize these nutrients.
Foods That Nourish the Blood
Dark Green Leafy Vegetables
Dark green vegetables are rich in chlorophyll, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that support healthy blood production.
Excellent choices include:
- Arugula
- Beet greens
- Bok choy
- Collard greens
- Dandelion greens
- Kale
- Mustard greens
- Spinach
- Swiss chard
- Watercress
Fresh herbs such as basil, cilantro, Italian parsley, and mint are also nutrient-dense additions to meals.
Tender greens like spinach, arugula, watercress, and fresh herbs require little or no cooking and can be enjoyed raw or added to cooked dishes just before serving. Heartier greens such as kale, collards, dandelion greens, and bok choy are best lightly steamed, quickly sautéed, or gently simmered to preserve both their nutrients and flavor.
Protein Sources
For some individuals, high-quality animal protein can be an excellent Blood tonic. Bone broth or soups prepared with bones may also provide beneficial nutrients.
Whenever possible, choose lean, high-quality meats and poultry that are raised without added hormones or unnecessary antibiotics.
Fruits
Dark-colored fruits contain valuable vitamins and antioxidants that help support healthy Blood.
Examples include:
- Blackberries
- Blueberries
- Dark grapes
- Raspberries
Whole Grains and Legumes
Whole grains and legumes provide important nutrients that support Blood production, including:
- B vitamins
- Iron
- Zinc
Legumes, green vegetables, and certain sea vegetables also contribute calcium and other essential minerals.
Iron-Rich Foods
Many plant foods are naturally rich in iron, including:
- Dark leafy greens
- Beans and lentils
- Whole grains
- Nuts and seeds
Additional excellent sources include:
- Spirulina
- Kelp
- Dulse
- Wakame
- Other mineral-rich sea vegetables
Vitamin C
Vitamin C helps increase the absorption of iron from plant-based foods. Pair iron-rich meals with vitamin C-rich vegetables such as bell peppers, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, or leafy greens.
Fresh fruit is also an excellent source of vitamin C. In TCM, however, excessive amounts of raw fruit may be difficult for some individuals with weak Spleen Qi to digest. Enjoying fruit in moderation, and choosing cooked fruit when appropriate, may be recommended based on your individual constitution.
A Note About Individualized Care
Every patient has a unique pattern of imbalance. While these foods are generally considered nourishing for Blood Deficiency, your acupuncturist may recommend additional dietary modifications based on your specific TCM diagnosis and overall health.
