On March 1st, 2025, Michigan Associates of Acupuncture and Integrative Medicine proudly celebrated 25 years in practice. We sat down with founder Julie Silver to learn how it all began—and what has kept her inspired over the past two and a half decades.
Hi Julie! Wow… 25 years. That’s quite an accomplishment. Tell us—when did you know you wanted to become an acupuncturist? How did that journey unfold?
Great question! I like to say that acupuncture found me. At the time, I was living in Chicago, working in a completely different field, and trying to figure out my path. Whenever I had minor health issues—stress, anxiety, PMS, back pain—I always turned to integrative healthcare. That’s when I discovered how effective acupuncture was in helping me manage those challenges. It became a regular part of my wellness routine.
Around the same time, I learned about local acupuncture schools. That sparked my curiosity. With some research and encouragement, I decided to take a leap of faith and enrolled in acupuncture school. That was back in 1996—it feels like just yesterday!
How did you go about starting your practice?
After finishing school, I moved back to Michigan to be closer to family. I also recognized a need for acupuncture and integrative medicine in the metro Detroit area. I began by renting space in a doctor’s office. After a year, I had built enough of a client base to go out on my own.
The practice grew organically from there. Over time, I was fortunate to bring together an incredible group of acupuncturists who joined my team. And now—here we are, 25 years later!
I was lucky to have both a business background and acupuncture training. The combination served me well. We’ve planted deep roots, and the practice has grown into what I like to think of as a well-established tree.
What would you say to someone considering acupuncture?
I would say—don’t wait! Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine are powerful healing modalities. They help the body strengthen, recover, and thrive. Using that same tree analogy, acupuncture treats both the roots and the branches of our health concerns.
It’s a gentle, non-invasive, and empowering form of care. Over the years, we’ve experienced countless success stories. Acupuncture can be a vital part of a comprehensive medical care plan.
In closing, what health advice would you offer?
- Take care of your body, mind, and spirit—health is the great equalizer.
- Listen to the subtle cues your body gives you.
- Be kind and gentle with yourself—treat your body with respect.
- Remember: healing is never a straight line.
- And of course, make your next acupuncture appointment now
Thank you, Julie—and congratulations on 25 incredible years!
